This poem draws its materials from the etchings on an ancient Greek oil jar at the Art Institute of Chicago and the phrase "art can make war look wrong" from Stephen Burt's review of Bruce Smith's Devotions in the New York Times Book Review (August 7, 2011). The epigraph is a lyric from Kid Rock's "Warrior," the National Guard-sponsored music video which played in movie theaters in the middle years of one of our longest wars.
