A Conversation with Paul Violi (2010)
I showed Paul my new poem
There were lines in it that he inspired
though he isn't mentioned by name.
The lines described "the enjoyment
on the face of a man smoking a cigarette,
a Tareyton, at four in the afternoon,
on the pavement in front of a copy center
on Greene Streetónot a look of defiance,
just plain pleasureódespite knowing
he belongs to the most openly despised
minority group in the United States today."
Paul grinned. "You got it," he said.
