I’ve wanted to ask for a long time: what is is like for you on that side of the war?it seems it’s so warm there that the snow turns to milkand a boy with a violin stands there all year in a t-shirtand doves fly higher than the rainbowsuspended between the snow and musiclike lost bullets between soul and bodybut I won’t write about us nowI’ll write about the cities from which children come instead of letterscome in long heavy envelopeswhere a frightened sun is like a frozen mandarinrolling out once a weekand smoke seeps through smokeand death begets deathtear open your chest, reveal your inner hell—reveal what loneliness ishow it is—when it’s so deserted there’s no one to harm youteach me the language of walls—and I’ll show you those cities—and the boy who you thought would sell his violinso that he could buy a coatI’ve wanted to ask for a long time: why? And when will this end?how much time has passed while I’ve been findinglighters in my pockets from the summer . . .where can we put all this fire?there is more fire than warmththere are more walls than doorswill you teach me the language of walls?

Ukrainian poet Anna Malihon’s English-language debut gathers daring, resilient, open-eyed poems written before and after Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The difficult fates voiced by the protagonists of Malihon’s poems intertwine with her own experience, weaving an alarming but beautiful world where the young grow old and love is met with war. This world, at first shocking, holds the reader in suspension, compelling a desire to rethink and reread. With deft allegory and startling metaphor, Malihon crafts a poetry that seeks to influence the course of events, to reroute history.
