the year of solution

Aby Kaupang

if   children   half   grey   &   the   dead   fence   remains
tall & near          if  only in low tones  &  on their  hands
with  a  startling  sky  dropping  parachutes  eye  mites
if there are flames in the shapes of marching bands  &
carmine  birch          then  could  there  be an  invitation
a  new  ceremony          on  the  lawn

Aby Kaupang is the author of Radiant Tether, & there’s you still thrill hour of the world to love (selected by Brenda Hillman as the winner of Free Verse Editions’ New Measure Prize),  NOS, disorder not otherwise specified (w. Matthew Cooperman),  Little “g” God Grows Tired of Me, and multiple other collections. More at https://www.abykaupang.com/

Invoking life’s relentless suffusion of “&,” & there’s you still thrill hour of the world to love forges a conjunctive body in which an inevitable landscape of contemporary crisis, suicide, disability, failed promises & the quotidian accrue. In the Sisyphean challenge of day after day, how does one helm stone? Through the page’s shattered frame, & in formally audacious exchanges, Kaupang risks recombinatory possibilities arising not as recovery, per se, but as endurance, awe, & possibly joy. Inflorescence is cyclic, turns towards fodder, feeds the day, recedes.

The poems are beautifully complemented by images of James Sullivan's sculptures, one of which adorns the book's cover.
