Swimming Between Islands

Charlotte Eichler

The island you were born onis crammed with cabinetsand grandfather clocks.Nearby, the island of childrenwith its shrieks and red tapestriesand the island of one day, when. You have the sea and its bed,a silvery current of hairand a necklace of eggswhere a hundred new things grow. The horizon looks toothedbut those are more islands:the island of slow translation, the island of choirs. An island of frogswho spend their lives inside flowers. On some you’ll find you breathe betterunderwater than in their thundery air.Soon you’ll have an island forest, ribcage ferns exhaling green.Swimmers will come to your houseto borrow your eyes.

She is currently poet-in-residence for the AHRC-funded project “Ragna’s Islands” and is working on new poetry inspired by the Saga of the Earls of Orkney and the Scottish islands of Fair Isle, Papay and North Ronaldsay.

"The pyrotechnic brilliance of Eichler's poetry resides in leap-making, a fearless embracing of the unlimited possibilities of form and style... there is a diaphanous quality to the poet's thinking that superimposes a luminous film over her tableux."
—Steve Whitaker, Yorkshire Times

"Charlotte Eichler's Swimming Between Islands is the kind of book that reads you with patient and exquisite attention. Or perhaps it teaches you to read it, which is to say to see and listen and feel your way toward layers of clarity, as when fog lifts from the shore and you see yourself. Which is to say these poems build a world where inner and outer landscapes converse, blur and converge; emotionally astute and ecologically attuned, they change your mind."
—Jenny Browne, Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize Judge
